Cal Neva Lodge and Casino
Crystal Bay, NV 89402
The Cal Neva Resort and Casino was previously known as the Calneva Resort and Cal-Neva Lodge. The casino and resort is located on the border between Nevada and California on the shores of Lake Tahoe. Its original building dates back to 1926 and it first became famous in 1930 when the national media picked up a story about Clara Bow. The actress had been canceling checks she owed to Cal-Neva.
The structure had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1937. In 1960, Frank Sinatra purchased the resort with other entertainers, including Dean Martin and mobster Sam Giancana.
The resort and casino is rumored to be quite haunted. Rumor has it that there are secret tunnels between the showroom and bungalows behind the hotel on the lake. This tunnel was said to be used by the stars that visited the hotel, such as Marilyn Monroe, President John F. Kennedy and Judy Garland. Monroe stayed at the hotel the weekend before her death in 1962 and it has been said that she haunts the cabin where she stayed.
